If you've ever wanted to make your very own chai tea from scratch, this is the blog for you.

Chai has to be one of our absolute favourite blends, with its spicy aroma, complex flavours and rich history. We've sipped hundreds - if not thousands - of cups, brewed up by chaiwalas all over India, and combined the best bits into our Grounded Tea chai masala.

So why the word 'masala?'

In India, masala means 'spice,' and chai means 'tea.' So chai masala in India, is what we refer to as chai tea in North America.

Chai masala is traditionally made on a stovetop, so this is how I too personally like to brew my own. Learning how to properly brew you own authentic cup has the power to whisk you away to another land without the leaving the comfort of your home. Scroll down to read my written instructions or watch my step-by-step video on how to brew your very own chai masala from start to finish.

Ready to start brewing?!

Whether you're stuck at home during quarantine, avoiding the cold or simply looking to improve your tea making skills, follow this step-by-step guide to making your very own chai tea brew.

Ingredients

  • Grounded Tea chai masala
  • Fresh ginger
  • Water
  • Milk
  • Sweetener: sugar or honey

Instructions

Step 1: Finely chop the ginger.

Step 2: Bring 1 cup of water to a boil.

Step 3: Once the water is boiling, add the tea and ginger. Hint: the more ginger you add, the more spice you'll taste!

Step 4: After a few minutes of steeping, now add 1 cup of milk.

Step 5: Once the mixture is boiling again, add in your desired sweetener.

Step 6: Allow the flavours to meld together for a few more minutes in the warm pot.

Step 7: Finally, pour the mixture into your favourite mug through a mesh strainer.

Step 8: Enjoy!

And that's it! Making your very own chai tea, or chai masala, is really that simple. As you start to get knack for the process, you can adapt this recipe to suit your tastes. Like it spicier? Crank up that ginger! Want it sweeter? Pour in more sweetener! Want it healthier? Choose a processed sugar-free option.

The great thing about brewing your own chai masala is that you can have absolutely delicious tea any time of the day, week, month or year! We'll have you converted to tea drinkers in no time ;)
